DURHAM, N.C. - The North Carolina Central University women's basketball team will prepare for the start of the 2009-10 season on Sunday, Nov. 8 when they host Johnson C. Smith University in an exhibition game at 4 p.m. in McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium.
NCCU looks to improve on their success from last season, where they went 10-17 and completed their first season with a full division one schedule. The Lady Eagles enter their third year of transition into division one and look to pick up where they left off with some key victories and a four-game home winning streak.
The Lady Eagles return seven from last year's squad, including four starters. NCCU will carry 14 student-athletes this year with one senior, three juniors, four sophomores and six freshmen. Leading this year's squad are sophomores Blaire Houston and Danielle DeBerry, who have been named captains of this year's team.
Houston had a successful freshman campaign, averaging 9.2 points and 2.5 rebounds, while dishing 65 assists. She shot 38.5 percent from the field and 73.8 percent from the foul line. DeBerry contributed significantly during her freshman year, averaging 5.2 points and 2.5 rebounds per game. She dished 31 assists and had 41 steals, while shooting 38.2 percent from the floor and 63.8 percent from the stripe.
The Lady Eagles will dive into one of their most challenging and competitive seasons in program history, where they will face five teams that appeared in the NCAA Tournament and two teams that made National Invitational Tournament appearances last season. Two of those teams are ranked among the top-10 in the 2010 preseason top-25 poll. NCCU will take on a 29-game schedule that includes 10 home games and 17 road trips.
Johnson C. Smith looks to defend their Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association title after going 20-11 last season to take home the crown. The Golden
Bulls return eight from last year's team, including four starters. JCSU will be led by senior forward Demetria Bell, who averaged 11.1 points and 10.1
rebounds last season, while shooting 47.7 percent from the floor and 63.5 percent from the free throw line.
NCCU will tip-off the 2009-10 season in College Park, Md., where they will take on ACC-powerhouse Maryland in the Comcast Center on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m.
The Terrapins were crowned the 2009 ACC Champions and made it to the Elite Eight in the 2009 NCAA Tournament. While in Maryland, NCCU will make a stop
in Baltimore to face the Morgan State Bears at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 16.
