LAST WEEK (NCCU): (NCC 53, Central State 22 - Durham, N.C.) North Carolina Central University scored on five of its first six possessions and amassed 492 yards of total offense during a 53-22 Homecoming victory over Central State University in front of a capacity crowd of 10,319 inside O'Kelly-Riddick Stadium in Durham, N.C. on Saturday. Five different Eagles found the end zone, with five scores coming on the ground and two through the air. NCCU junior running back Tim Shankle and senior receiver Will Scott had two touchdowns apiece, while senior fullback Saeed Abdul-Azeez, sophomore quarterback Michael Johnson and rookie running back Arthur Goforth each rushed for a score. NCCU's Shankle ran for a game-high 88 yards on 16 carries, while Scott caught six passes for 121 yards. Johnson completed 14-of-25 passing for a career-high 246 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore receiver Geovonie Irvine had four receptions for 84 yards, and Tony McCord added 80 yards on 13 rushing attempts. Freshman kicker Frankie Cardelle made 2-of-3 field goals, along with six extra-point kicks to account for 12 points. NCCU's 492 total yards was a balanced 246 yards rushing and 246 yards passing. The Eagles defense held Central State to just 198 yards of total offense, including only 37 rushing yards on 27 attempts. For the second straight contest, the NCCU defense intercepted four passes, with Rakeem Vick, Robert Stewart, David Ingram and Brandon Outlaw collecting picks. Junior linebacker Donald Laster tallied a team-best six tackles with a sack for NCCU.
LAST WEEK (Old Dominion): (Old Dominion 31, Georgetown 10 - Norfolk, Va.) Redshirt sophomore quarterback Thomas DeMarco was down right scary Halloween evening as the Monarch quarterback ran for 144 yards along with three touchdowns to help ODU improve to 7-2 on the year in a 31-10 victory over Georgetown. The Monarchs, who have won a season best four-in-a-row now, improve to 7-2 on the year and hold Georgetown winless at 0-8. The outcome was never in doubt as the Monarchs scored on their opening drive for the seventh time this season and established a 17-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. DeMarco finished the night with 144 yards and completing six of his 11 passes with one interception. Desmond Williams ran the ball 24 times to accumulate 113 yards in the victory. Reid Evans posted four receptions for the receiving corps totaling 36 yards. Defensively, Jake Sweedyk made a team-high nine stops for ODU.
THE COACHES: Mose Rison is in his third season as head coach at NCCU with an overall record of 12-17. Rison was announced as the school's 19th head football coach on Feb. 6, 2007, assuming the role of head coach for the first time in his 25-year coaching career. Rison served as assistant head coach, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach during the Eagles historic 11-1 campaign in 2006. With Rison directing NCCU's offense, the 2006 Eagles scored 371 points (30.9 per game), the most in school history. Under Rison's tutelage, freshman quarterback Stadford Brown was named as the "SBN Sports Doug Williams Offensive Player of the Year," the 2006 CIAA Offensive Player of the Year and CIAA Rookie of the Year. A 1978 graduate of Central Michigan University, Rison spent the 2005 season as the Quarterbacks Coach/Passing Coordinator at Davidson College, where the Wildcats averaged more than 200 yards passing per game running a West Coast offensive system. He has also held positions at Livingstone College (Offensive Coordinator, 2004), the University of Arizona (Wide Receivers/Passing Coordinator, 2003), Stanford University (Wide Receivers, 1995-2000), Rutgers University (Wide Receivers/Tight Ends, 1991-94), the U.S. Naval Academy (Wide Receivers, 1988-90), and Central Michigan University (Wide Receivers, 1981-87). During his tenure at Stanford, Rison coached in three bowl games, including the 2000 Rose Bowl. Rison, the cousin of five-time NFL All-Pro receiver Andre Rison, spent two seasons (2001-02) in the National Football League coaching ranks as the wide receivers coach with the New York Jets, helping to develop Laveranues Coles and Santana Moss. He has also held NFL summer internships with the Baltimore Ravens (2000), Chicago Bears (1999), New York Jets (1993) and Detroit Lions (1988). A standout running back for Central Michigan from 1974-77, Rison helped the Chippewas to a 13-1 record and a Division II national title as a freshman. He rushed for 1,283 yards and scored 12 touchdowns as a senior to earn all-conference and team MVP honors. Rison and his wife, Marilynn, have two children, Dominique (23) and Tara (20).
On June 21, 2005, the Old Dominion Board of Visitors voted to bring football back to the campus of Old Dominion. The man in charge of making a dream become reality is Bobby Wilder. Prior to his arrival at ODU, Wilder served on the Maine staff for the past 17 years and was promoted to assistant head coach and offensive coordinator in 2000 before moving to associate head coach in 2001. As coordinator, Wilder has orchestrated a balanced attack. The Black Bears averaged 29.1 points per game in 2004. Wilder was named the Assistant Coach of the Year by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston in 2004, which is presented annually to the top assistant coach in New England. A 1987 graduate of Maine with a degree in physical education, Wilder captained the Black Bears to the Yankee Conference Championship his senior year. An All-New England quarterback in 1985, he left Maine as the school's all-time leading passer with 4,493 yards.
NCCU OFFENSE LEAVES OPPOSITION WITH 50/50 VISION: NCCU scored at least 50 points in back-to-back games for the first time in 41 years. The Eagles cruised past Central Methodist 52-7 on Oct. 17, then defeated Central State 53-22 on Oct. 31 after a bye week. An NCCU squad had not accomplished that feat since the 1968 season. That year, the Eagles beat Shaw 60-8 on Nov. 2, 1968, then crushed Virginia Union 60-6 on Nov. 16, 1968.
GREAT SCOTT ... SENIOR RECEIVER AMONG NCCU CAREER LEADERS: NCCU senior receiver Will Scott jumped into the 10th position on the school's career receiving yards list courtesy of a career-best 179-yard performance at North Carolina A&T on Oct. 3. He now has 1,764 career receiving yards. Scott's 106 career receptions ranks 12th in NCCU history. He needs seven catches to slip into the top 10 on that list.
RUN TIM, RUN ... JUNIOR SHANKLE AMONG TOP NCCU GROUND GAINERS: NCCU junior running back Tim Shankle currently ranks 10th on the Eagles' career rushing list with 1,591 ground yards. Shankle needs 96 ground yards to move into ninth place, passing Shawn Gibbs (1993-97), who is currently ninth with 1,687 rushing yards.
NO PASSING ZONE ... INGRAM TOP PASS DEFENDER SINCE 1996: In the first eight games this season, NCCU sophomore cornerback David Ingram has recorded 16 passes defended with 13 pass break-ups and three interceptions. Ingram has already matched the single-season output of Craig Amos in 2006, but the next-best effort was by Adrian Jones in 1996 with 15 pass deflections and eight interceptions for 23 passes defended. On Oct. 31 versus Central State, Ingram tallied five pass break-ups and an interception.
TEAM'S TOP DEFENDER NOMINATED FOR CoSIDA ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA: NCCU junior defensive lineman Teryl White, the team's top defender with 46 tackles, has been nominated for CoSIDA Academic All-America honors. The Winston-Salem, N.C. native boasts an overall grade point average of 3.476 as a business management and administration major.
MONARCHS BOAST DUAL THREAT AT QUARTERBACK: Old Dominion red-shirt sophomore quarterback Thomas DeMarco has proven to be a dominant weapon as the team leader in both passing and rushing. Standing 5-11, 205 pounds, DeMarco has thrown for 1,507 yards and 18 touchdowns with only three interceptions, while rushing for 619 yards and 10 touchdowns. He enters the contest averaging 236.2 yards of total offense per game.
MONARCHS GET OFF TO GOOD START: Old Dominion has scored on its opening drive seven times in nine games, including touchdowns in the last three contests. Here is what the Monarchs have done on their opening drives this season: field goal vs. Chowan, touchdown vs. Virginia Union, punt at Jacksonville, touchdown vs. Monmouth, touchdown at Fordham, fumble vs. Presbyterian, touchdown vs. Campbell, touchdown at Savannah State, and touchdown vs. Georgetown.
A RARE FLOCK OF EAGLES: Eagles are known to soar alone, but a rare flock of Eagles have gathered at O'Kelly-Riddick Stadium this season. NCCU's first home game featured the host Eagles versus the Eagles of Morehead State University. On Oct. 17, the NCCU Eagles once again welcomed the Eagles, this time from Central Methodist University.
NCCU EAGLES AGAINST NATIONALLY-RANKED OPPONENTS: Since beginning play as an NCAA Division I-FCS competition 2007, NCCU has squared off against four nationally-ranked opponents, all resulting in losses. The Eagles suffered a 56-7 defeat at No. 8 James Madison on Sept. 6, 2008, and then fell at No. 3 Cal Poly by a score of 49-3 on Nov. 8, 2008. Earlier this season, NCCU held a 10-7 halftime lead at No. 24 Liberty, before the Eagles eventually succumbed to the Flames, 35-10, on Sept. 12. On Oct. 10, NCCU led No. 9/10 Appalachian State at the end of the first quarter by a score of 14-7, before the Mountaineers rallied for a 55-21 victory.
