DURHAM -- Today, Durham saxophonist Marcus Anderson will be having his "American Idol" moment when he performs on the main stage at the Capital Jazz Festival in Columbia, Md.
Anderson was chosen from among six musicians who performed Friday in the festival's sixth annual competition. Musicians competed for $5,000 in prize money and a chance to perform at the festival today.
Anderson, 24, a former student in the jazz studies program at N.C. Central University, performed two of his original compositions Friday -- "Sparkle City" and "Pretty Things" -- and his arrangement of Michael Jackson's "Remember the Time." The original compositions are from Anderson's CD "From the Heart," scheduled for a July release. His first CD is titled "My Turn."
Among the musicians performing at the 17th Capital Jazz Festival are Al Jarreau, George Duke and Chaka Khan. S.M.V., the bass trio of Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller and Victor Wooten, also performed at the festival, and will perform a concert at the Carolina Theatre in Durham on Monday.
Anderson will perform today at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia.
