Professor Joseph Aicher, NCCU's Department of Political Science, is retiring after 36 years on the job. He was one of twenty-two employees honored recently during a special ceremony for retirees at NCCU.

Professor Aicher was hired by former President Dr. Albert Whiting, during his administration in 1970 as an assistant professor of political science. He also served as chair of the department from 1980 until 1997.

He has worked under six different Chancellors and has seen much change over the years. He believes the greatest change is the development of the physical campus and academic programs.

When asked about his many years on the job, Aicher says, I have seen the program grow so much. When I started, we had about 60 majors and now we have more than 400 majors.

Aicher is most famously known for bringing the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) program to NCCU in the mid 90s. I saw a need to help students here prepare for the exam, so I organized a study assistance program that I thought would be helpful, and over the years it has been instrumental in helping many students excel and improve their SAT scores.

He is very proud of both the pre-law program and the SAT program that began during his early days. Aicher is quick to point out that he has had six students who have earned perfect scores on the SAT since the program began.

Aicher is also most proud of his days as an assistant coach of the NCCU football team. From his hire date until 1997, when a medical condition forced him to stop coaching, he served as an assistant coach with the team. He has coached all of the different groups of the football team and fondly recalls some of his most memorable players, like Robert Clark, Robert Green, and Carl Sanders. During his tenure with the team, NCCU won five division championships and the biggest rival was North Carolina A&T State University.

In addition to coaching, he also managed the academic requirements for the team to help ensure that the players not only did their best on the field, but also went on to graduate on time.

While he was academic coach for the team, 85 per cent of the team graduated on time. He recalls his famous speech he gave his athletes, You are going to have many great days at OKelly-Riddick Stadium, but the best day you will ever have, is graduation day because that is the day you win the game of life!

Aicher has been married to Kathleen for 40 years and they have three children.

My life has exceeded my expectations, because of my wife and NCCU, says Aicher. I am so very proud of my maroon and gray. I am an eagle for life.

He goes on to say that he will miss the students and his colleagues in his retirement and that NCCU was a great place to work. I always measure my success by the success of my students. I have succeeded and I am very proud of my students.

In his retirement, Aicher will not be slowing down. He will continue to offer his SAT preparation program across the southeast, traveling in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia and Florida. His calendar is already booked for the next year. He will also continue to hold SAT camps on the campus of NCCU and 3 to 4 day weekend programs for different church and community organizations. This semester, he conducted sessions for Men of Vision with Mayor Bill Bell and 100 Black Men.
