DURHAM -- The decision on who'll be N.C. Central University's next chancellor is expected today.
Erskine Bowles, president of the UNC system that oversees NCCU, is ready to offer a name for consideration by the system's Board of Governors, said Joni Worthington, the system's associate vice president for communications.
She declined to offer information about the nominee, citing personnel confidentiality. The choice will be made in open session, she said.
But several names have circulated in the media for weeks -- reports that neither NCCU nor UNC system officials have disputed. The finalists reportedly are Reginald Avery, executive vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of South Carolina Upstate; Clarence Armbrister, senior vice president at Temple University; and Charlie Nelms, vice president, Indiana University.
The chancellor search has been a subject of controversy, with complaints centering on the secrecy and integrity of the procedure.
There also has been an undercurrent of support for a future NCCU leader with ties to the home city and university -- which would fit the profile of Durham native and NCCU Provost Beverly Washington Jones, but not that of departing Chancellor James Ammons, who is returning to his alma mater, Florida A&M University, as president.
Some have alleged that Jones was bypassed or that the search process was stacked against her.
Critics of the search have included incoming NCCU Student Body President Tomasi Larry and longtime community activist Harris Johnson. Neither could be reached for comment Thursday.
There were even some calls last month to scrap the search committee, name an interim chancellor -- preferably Jones -- and restart the search process.
The Board of Governors is scheduled to meet at 9:30 a.m. in the main board room of the UNC General Administration Building at 910 Raleigh Road in Chapel Hill.
There are 32 voting members on the UNC Board of Governors, who will be choosing a successor to Ammons. He is set to take charge at FAMU next month.
According to Worthington, the question of when the NCCU chancellor appointee would assume leadership of the Fayetteville Street campus would be decided at the Board of Governors meeting.
The NCCU Board of Trustees formed a search committee, which recommended a slate to the full board of NCCU. The NCCU board forwarded a list of finalists to Bowles, Worthington said.
In addition, the same firm that helped recruit Ammons in 2000, Heidrick & Struggles Inc. of Atlanta, was brought in to help find a replacement.
One point of which there seems to have been no dispute is that Ammons' replacement will have a major leadership void to fill.
Ammons, a native of Winter Haven, Fla., was provost at FAMU, located at Tallahassee, Fla., before taking charge of NCCU in 2001.
During Ammons' chancellorship, NCCU underwent big-time improvements, including a $36 million science complex on the site of the former Hillside High School, expansion of the law school, upgrades to B.N. Duke Auditorium and construction of new dormitories and renovations of existing ones.
NCCU also has received much attention for an impressive biotechnology program. And NCCU's enrollment increased by more than 50 percent to more than 8,600 students.
